Syntax – Indirect Speech

Indirect (or Reported) Speech is used to report what someone has said indirectly. For example: Η Ελένη μου είπε πως θα πάει στο Λονδίνο αύριο.
By changing the direct into indirect speech some alterations should be made:
A) Tenses:
a) We can either use the same tense as the speaker in the direct speech
b) or we can make the following changes:
i) Present Tense to Past Continuous
ii) Future to Θα + Future (Present Conditional)
iii) Past and Present Perfect to Past Perfect
B) The Pronouns usually are changed.
C) Time words
i) σήμερα stays σήμερα or changes to χθες or εκείνη τη μέρα.
ii) αύριο stays αύριο or changes to αύριο or την επόμενη μέρα.
iii) τώρα stays τώρα or changes to εκείνη τη στιγμή, εκείνη την ώρα, αμέσως.
iv) εδώ stays εδώ or changes to εκεί
D) Sentences
i) if the reported verb is one of the following (λέω, ισχυρίζομαι, δηλώνω, νομίζω, πιστεύω, υποθέτω, διαπιστώνω, θεωρώ, καταλαβαίνω, γνωρίζω, αισθάνομαι, νιώθω), then you add ότι + indicative mood.
(Πρόταση κρίσεως > Ειδική πρόταση)
ii) if the reported verb is: θέλω, επιθυμώ, ζητώ, διατάζω, επιτρέπω, απαγορεύω, μπορώ, οφείλω, πρέπει, χρειάζεται, συμβαίνει, then you add να + subjunctive mood.
(Πρόταση επιθυμίας > Βουλητική πρόταση)
